Episode 68
You might remember a brave little kitten from one of my earlier stories. That brave little kitten is back with a new adventure in a new construction site. Jack got separated from his family in a construction site. He was a shy, scared cat, but that experience made him brave and daring. Now Jack goes out of his way to explore the world around him. But he still prefers a good construction site.
This story is in the third person and the present tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: screwdriver, hammer, pipe wrench, sledgehammer, wall, and carpet.
The Daring Little Kitten
Jack is a cat. He is a little cat. He is a kitten. Jack has 6 brothers and 5 sisters. All his brothers and sisters are big. Jack is the smallest in the family.
Jack used to be shy. He used to like to be close to his mother and father. He liked his father’s protection and his mother’s love. Jack’s siblings were brave and explored everything, but Jack was afraid of the world.
But one day everything changed. Jack fell asleep in a box with his family and when he woke up in the morning, he was alone in the middle of a construction site. Jack ran from a front loader to a mountain of dirt. Then he found himself in an excavator and he fell in a dump truck. He jumped from the dump truck to a beam carried by a forklift. Then he found himself inside a tube lifted by a crane.
Now, after his adventure on the construction site, Jack isn’t shy anymore. He is brave. He is more than brave: he is curious and daring. Now Jack looks for opportunities to explore.
One day, Jack walks though a community of elegant houses. The houses are big with pretty yards. He passes a house that doesn’t look like the others. This house has a lot of activity. There are several trucks in front of the house. A lot of people are walking around. The people are wearing yellow helmets.
When Jack sees the yellow helmets, he feels curious. He remembers the yellow helmets from the construction site, but this is a house. There aren’t cranes or forklifts lifting beams in the air. There aren’t excavators filling dump trucks with dirt.
Jack approaches the house because he is curious. In front of the house there is a big container of garbage. The workers throw objects in the container. They throw parts of walls, insulation, cabinets, and more.
The front door is open, so Jack enters the house. Inside the house there is also a lot of activity. There are workers with screwdrivers. The screwdrivers turn screws to connect pieces of wood. There are other workers with hammers and nails. They hit the nails with the hammers to hang things on the wall.
Jack passes the workers with their screwdrivers and hammers and he sees a man working on the pipes in the bathroom. The man is a plumber. He has a pipe wrench that he is using to adjust the pipes. He doesn’t want the water to leak out of the plumbing in the wall.
Jack sees a valve in the bathroom. He pushes the valve and, suddenly, water leaks out of the pipes. The plumber is surprised. There is a cat in the bathroom!
“Come here, kitty!” The plumber yells.
But Jack ignores him. He wants to look for more interesting things in the house.
Jack goes to the kitchen. In the kitchen, there are a lot of cupboards. Jack hides from the plumber in a cabinet. Suddenly, he hears a “Bam!” and the whole cupboard shakes. Another Bam! Jack looks out the door of the cupboard and sees a man with a helmet and safety glasses. The worker lifts a sledgehammer over his head. Then he swings the sledgehammer on the cupboard to destroy it. The cupboard breaks in pieces. The worker puts the pieces of the cupboard in a wheelbarrow. Then he lifts the sledgehammer to destroy the next cupboard.
But there is a problem. Jack is in that cupboard! Jack runs out of the cupboard. The worker is surprised. There is a cat hidden in the kitchen cupboard!
“Come here, kitty!” The worker yells.
But Jack ignores him. He wants to look for more interesting things in the house.
Jack goes to the living room. In the living room, there is a woman. She looks at cables in the wall. She uses a device to check the circuits. The woman is an electrician. She takes out some cables and connects new ones.
Jack thinks the cables look fun. He wants to play with them. He looks at the roll of new cables. When the electrician isn’t looking, Jack pushes the roll. It’s really fun! Jack pushes and pushes. In a few seconds, there are cables all over the living room. The electrician is surprised. There is a cat playing with the cables!
“Come here, kitty!” The electrician yells.
But Jack ignores her. He wants to look for more interesting things in the house.
Jack sees a tube and enters it to escape from the electrician. When he enters the tube, he realizes that it is a roll of carpet. Suddenly, the carpet rises. Someone moves the carpet to another room in the house. When they put down the carpet, Jack runs to leave the tube, but he can’t. The carpet is next to the wall! Jack runs to the other side of the carpet tube, but there is a wall there too. He’s trapped!
The carpet moves again, but not in the air. The workers are unrolling it. Jack tumbles inside while the carpet unrolls. Finally, Jack isn’t trapped, but he is very dizzy. The workers are surprised. There is a cat in the carpet!
“Come here, kitty!” The workers yell.
But Jack ignores them. He wants to look for more interesting things in the house.
Jack runs to a room. There are two men working in the room. The men are painters. One painter puts a paintbrush in a can of blue paint. The he uses the paintbrush to paint the corners of the wall. The other painter has a paint roller. There is a tray full of paint. The painter moves the paint roller in the tray to get it wet. When the roller is covered in paint, he uses the roller to paint the wall.
Jack is curious and wants to see more. He enters the room and walks to the tray. He touches the blue paint with his paw an then he touches the wall. Now there is a blue paw painted on the wall. Jack thinks it is very pretty. The painters see the paw and are surprised. There is a cat painting the wall!
“Come here, kitty!” The painters yell.
But Jack ignores them.
He decides that it is time to return home. Jack runs from the painters in the bedroom. He passes the workers with the new carpet. He passes the electrician with her cables in the living room. He passes the worker with his sledgehammer in the kitchen. He passes the plumber and the pipes in the bathroom. He passes the workers with their screwdrivers and hammers. He leaves the house and passes the big container of garbage.
When Jack arrives home, his brothers and sisters want to hear the story of his blue paw. Jack tells them about the construction in the house. He explains how he helped the plumber with the water, how he destroyed kitchen cupboards, how he installed carpet, and finally, how he painted a bedroom with professional painters.
Jack’s family listens attentively. They are surprised by the shy cat that has becomes a daring cat.
The End.
