Simple Stories in English: The Animal Band

Season 1, episode 5

The world is full of musical styles and instruments. Some people like to sing, others like to play, and even more just like to listen. Music can bring people together. Ed and Felix like to make music and want to form a band. Ed sings, Felix and others play instruments and other people just listen to the music.

This short, simple story is told in the present tense and focuses on the words “likes”, “play”, “music”, and “sings”.

THE ANIMAL BAND

Ed is an elephant. Felix is a mouse. Ed and Felix are very good friends. They like to spend time together. They like to listen to music in Ed’s garage every Saturday. Felix likes Mariachi music, but Ed likes Rock and Roll music more.

One day, Felix and Ed are listening to a song by Drake. Ed likes the song a lot. Felix likes the song too. Ed likes to sing and Felix likes to play the guitar.

Then Felix has an idea. He has an excellent idea! Felix looks at Ed and says, “Ed, you sing very well and I play the guitar very well. We need to form a band!”

“Yes!” Ed yells. “I like that idea, but we need more people.”

“Yes, we need more people in the band,” Felix responds. “Let’s go to the park!”

Ed and Felix run to the park and see their friend Greta. Greta is a panda bear. She is white, black and fat. Ed walks to Greta and says, “Good morning, Greta. Felix and I are forming a band. We want more people in the band than just the two of us. What kind of music do you like?

“I like Trap music,” Greta responds. “I like Betty G a lot, but I like Bad Bunny the most.”

Ed thinks. He does not like Trap music. He detests Trap music. He thinks for a long time, then he finally says, “Sorry, Greta. I don’t like Becky G or Bad Bunny and I don’t like Trap music. Bye.”

Next, Felix sees his friend Pancho. Pancho is a rhinoceros. He is big, gray, and kind. Pancho plays the bongo drums. He plays the bongos very well. Felix runs over to Pancho and says, “Good morning. I like how you play the bongos, man!”

“Thank you. Do you like to play the guitar?” Pancho asks when he sees Felix’s guitar.

“Yes!” Felix responds. “I like to play the guitar a lot.”

Felix plays his guitar. Pancho plays the bongos.

“I like how you play, Felix. You are excellent!” Pancho exclaims.

Then a giraffe walks to the group of Ed, Felix and Pancho. The giraffe is tall and thin. She is yellow and brown.

“Hi,” the giraffe says. “I like your music.”

“Thanks!” The animals say. “What’s your name?”

“My name is Lula,” the giraffe says. “I don’t play the guitar and I don’t play the bongos, but I do play the accordion.”

Lula the giraffe plays her accordion, Pancho plays the bongos, and Felix plays the guitar. The animals play very well. It is an Animal Band!

A lot of people in the park listen to the music of the Animal Band. People run from all over the park to listen to the music. Lula, Pancho and Felix play very well. It is an improvised concert! All the people like the music a lot.

Ed likes the music too. Ed sees a microphone. Ed takes the microphone and shouts to the people.

“Good morning, friends! How’s that music?”

“Excellent!” the audience shouts. There are a lot of people. There are possibly sixty-seven (67) people.

Felix, Pancho y Lula play Ed’s favorite song. The audience shouts. Ed takes the microphone and sings. The audience likes the song a lot. Ed and the audience sing together.
